Unit 08 | -아서/어서 + -니까 | (Cause & Effect)

Today’s Grammar

-아서/어서 + -니까 (Cause & Effect)

Grammar Pattern

-아서/어서 + -니까 (because ~ so ~ when/after)

This structure shows a chain of cause and result, where one action happens because of a reason, and another outcome naturally follows.
It’s a very natural way to describe real-life cause → action → result situations in Korean.

Example Sentences

1️⃣ 날씨가 추워서 창문을 닫으니까 따뜻해졌어요.
→ It was cold, so I closed the window, and it became warm.

2️⃣ 음악이 너무 커서 볼륨을 줄이니까 조용해졌어요.
→ The music was too loud, so I turned it down, and it became quiet.

3️⃣ 방 안이 답답해서 창문을 여니까 바람이 들어왔어요.
→ The room felt stuffy, so I opened the window, and the breeze came in.

4️⃣ 커피를 너무 진하게 타서 물을 더 넣으니까 딱 좋았어요.
→ I made the coffee too strong, so I added some water, and it turned out perfect.

5️⃣ 컴퓨터가 느려서 다시 시작하니까 빨라졌어요.
→ My computer was slow, so I restarted it, and it got faster.

Grammar & Usage

1️⃣ Verb/Adjective stem + -아서/어서 (because, so)
2️⃣ Verb stem + -니까 (when/after/because)

Example:

날씨가 추워서 창문을 닫으니까 따뜻해졌어요.
→ It was cold, so I closed the window, and it became warm.

Key Points

• The first clause (-아서/어서) expresses the reason or cause.
• The second clause (-니까) shows what result or effect followed.
• Common in storytelling, explanations, and logical sequences.
• Very natural in spoken Korean to connect actions smoothly.

Practice Tip

Think of a small daily situation that has a clear reason and result.
That’s the perfect time to use “-아서/어서 + -니까.”

Example

방이 너무 밝아서 암막 커튼을 치니까 어두워졌어요.
→ The room was too bright, so I closed the blackout curtains, and it became dark.
